Lynx.MD Supports Partner’s Poster Presentation at the American Rhinologic Society ARS 2024 Symposium

Descriptive Analysis of CRSwNP Patients in US Clinical Practice to be Presented at American Rhinologic Society Annual Meeting

Lynx.MD, a provider of a comprehensive medical data intelligence platform, is honored to support our partners, Sanofi and Regeneron, in the presentation of a new study at the American Rhinologic Society (ARS) 70th Annual meeting in September 2024. The study sheds light on the characteristics of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients in the US healthcare system. The research was conducted using the Lynx.MD platform and real-world data from leading otolaryngology practices analyzing patient demographics, clinical features, and treatment patterns.

Objective: The study aimed to explore real-world characteristics of CRSwNP patients in the US, focusing on whether they underwent surgery after diagnosis.

Methods: This retrospective longitudinal study utilized electronic medical record data, including notes and procedure reports, from Lynx.MD. Researchers identified CRSwNP patients diagnosed between July 2018 and December 2022. The first visit to an otolaryngologist for nasal polyps served as the starting point. Patients included in the study were 12 years or older, had at least three doctor visits, and a minimum follow-up period of 12 months. The analysis categorized patients into surgical and non-surgical groups based on whether they received surgery during the follow-up period. Researchers compared demographic and clinical characteristics between the two groups.

Key Findings:

  • Out of 6,219 CRSwNP patients, 28% (1,726) underwent surgery. The surgical group was younger (average age 47.4 years) and had a higher prevalence of comorbidities, including atopy, allergic rhinitis, and asthma, compared to the non-surgical group (average age 51.5 years).
  • Surgical patients demonstrated greater use of biologic medications (15.5% vs. 11.7%) and had a shorter time to initiate these treatments (426.7 days vs. 498.5 days). Additionally, oral corticosteroid use was significantly higher in the surgical group (82.9% vs. 57.5%).

Conclusion:

This study revealed distinct characteristics between surgical and non-surgical CRSwNP patients in the US. Patients who underwent surgery were typically younger, had a higher prevalence of comorbidities, and received more intensive treatment compared to those who did not undergo surgery.
